Three “hey, you, get off of my cloud” reasons to ride Falkor over to Subterranean tonight…
1. Chicago dream poppers Panda Riot were one of our bands to watch last year and even though 2011 has come and gone, we’re still pretty interested in them. The group plays sparkling, spacey pop jams that envelope you in a heady mix of fuzzy guitars and siren-like melodies. The group is on the verge of releasing its follow-up to its 2010 EP Near and Far and are sure to play some of those mesmerizing new tracks tonight. LISTEN: “Serious Radical Girls“
We just can’t seem to get enough Dastardly. Luckily, the band has released the newest of six videos filmed on a farm in San Marcos, Texas (30 miles southwest of Austin). This time around the band gets together to cover the ’50s-era ballad, first made popular by Slim Whitman, “Rose Marie.” The band sound excellent and the vocals are top-notch as always. Catch Dastardly in person when the group sets up shop at the Whistler next Wednesday, February 22, with Kentucky Knife Fight.
Three reasons to nurse your post-Valentine’s Day hangover with a free show at Township tonight…
1. Opening tonight’s show is folk pop songstress Jessica Risker also known as Deadbeat or the lead singer for upbeat Chicago indie rockers Absinthe and the Dirty Floors, if you like. Under the Deadbeat banner Risker and friends team up to create calming acoustic folk ballads that blend the quirkiness of Beck with the smokey tint of Cat Power. Stay tuned for more news on this year’s Blackout Fest as the festival approaches.
Monday Afternoon Quick Fix runs every Monday afternoon to showcase the best of Chicago music news, views and stories from around the interwebs and blogosphere that we might have missed.
• As reported late last month, orchestral pop outfit Canasta has ventured to Mongolia as a part of the U.S. State Department’s Arts Envoy program. The group has been providing Gapers Block with a daily tour diary and from the sounds of it, the trek has been mostly positive with the band encountering enthusiastic locals at its performances and sampling Mongolian vodka.
• The Chicago Reader reports on Logan Square restaurant/concert venue Panchos’ transformation into “Township,” a new restaurant/venue by MPshows and restaurateur Tamiz Ciccone. If only Pancho, the man, would hang around shows just to play sax with the bands on stage.
• The Sun-Times is having a little Grammy-related fun by asking readers to vote for their “fantasy” Chicago All-Star band. C’mon you know, you want R. Kelly to team up with Liz Phair, Curtis Mayfield, and Bun E. Carlos from Cheap Trick.
In order to pay for their most recent album Foolish Croon, Chicago dance rockers Blane Fonda took to Kickstarter. Donors came through for the band and Blane Fonda is showing their gratitude by releasing videos featuring selected cover songs. The latest is a blistering version of Rush’s “Tom Sawyer.” The band does a fairly decent rendition of the song with singer Mark Wetzel able to capture Geddy Lee’s vocal inflections. The video also comes equipped with a big American flag in the background and a bald eagle. Since Rush is from Canada, the move seems a bit odd, but… U S A! U S A! The other videos and artwork the band created for its kickstarter donors can be found at the band’s Tumblr page.
We’re mere hours away from starting the weekend, and with the season finale of football over, we’ll actually have to go outside. Luckily, there are tons of great shows, and many fundraising for a good cause, over the next few days.
